(Hosting-NewsWire.com, November 26, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- In an article former Cuban leader Fidel Castro published in state-media Monday, he stated that he suffers from no major illness, not even a headache.
The article came in sharp criticism to rumors about him being near death. Article photos, taken by son Alex Castro, show the 86-year-old revolutionary icon standing outside wearing a cowboy hat and checkered shirt. Another photo shows Castro reading Friday's copy of the Communist Party newspaper Granma.
"I don't even remember what a headache feels like," claims Castro. The photos were released to show the dishonesty of the rumor mongers. The article was published on the state-run Cubadebate website as the latest evidence the former Cuban president is alive and well after speculations of his illness.
Social media networks and Twitter have been busy with claims of Castro's downgrading health. A positive Castro health outlook came when a visiting former Venezuelan vice president released a photo of a meeting he said he had with Castro, and that Castro’s health is "magnificent."
In the article Monday, Castro stated the disinformation about Cuba is not a surprise and that he has been dealing with it since the 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion.
He criticized Western media propaganda and singled out Spain's ABC newspaper for publishing for promoting claims that he suffered a stroke and only had weeks to live.
Since March and the Pope Benedict XVI visit, Castro has been out of the public eye. He also stopped writing his “Reflections” opinion pieces, the last of which was published June 2012. Castro explained that he chose to stop the opinion pieces of his own accord, not because he was too ill to continue writing.
After his meeting with Castro, former Venezuelan Vice President Elias Jaua showed The Associated Press photos of the meeting in an attempt to minimize persistent rumors that the former Cuban leader was drastically ill. Jaua also confirmed that Castro looked “very well” and personally accompanied him back to his hotel where they spoke of politics, history, culture and tourism.
Following a severe illness, Castro stepped down in 2006, handing power to his brother Raul.
