(Hosting-NewsWire.com, November 23, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- Google, Inc.’s chief financial officer is proud of the company’s new Nexus 10 tablet.
To show off its capabilities, Patrick Pichette launches a YouTube video and cranks up the volume, filling the world’s biggest search engine’s new Toronto offices with hip-hop bass.
“When we make hardware, we want to push [boundaries] on the display,” he said. “Look at that video, it has got to be awesome.”
Pichette is one of Google’s biggest cheerleaders, particularly when it comes to the company’s new line of hardware.
The company known for its web-search algorithms is a huge presence in the hardware market, having recently released a seven-inch tablet and a media server. It is poised to release a 10-inch version of the tablet and a new version of its Nexus smartphone.
Not only does the diversification give Google a wider range of revenue sources, it also “We were good at crawling and searching documents,” said Pichette. “But the world is not made of documents, the world is made of entities.”
While Google still generates billions of dollars in advertising revenue, its competition is relying less and less on single-purpose search engines. Rather, social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter are beginning to compete when it comes to search queries about what products to buy or concerts to attend. Users are more likely to follow the recommendations of fellow human beings than they are in machine-generated results.
Pichette states that this is one of the reasons Google is focusing on the hardware market. First, Google created its Android operating system for mobile devices, which third-party manufacturers such as Samsung and Sony used on their devices.
Google has since worked with various partners to manufacture its own phones and tablets. Pichette refers to them as “reference devices,” saying they allow the company to focus users on which Android features it believes are most important.
“With reference devices, we can push the envelope,” said Pichette.
He emphasizes Google Now, a software geared toward understanding a user’s locale and habits and offering information tailored to those things.
To illustrate Google Now, Pichette shows how his phone comprehends that he journeyed from California to Toronto by indicating the time in both locations as well as the exchange rate between Canada the United States.
“That’s not a big deal because I just travelled to Canada. But if you land in Uzbekistan, it’s very useful,” he said.
