This growth in sales has compelled conventional retailers to embrace online sales as well. Nevertheless, there remains a gap between the revenue of those retailers, who were the early adopters of online retailing, and the late adopters.
The study has revealed that early adopters were successful in grabbing more shares of the revenue as compared to those who were a little reluctant at the start.
According to the Roy Morgan Study, those small and medium businesses which had been in the business of online retailing saw a five percent growth in their sales. In contrast, those who shifted to online retailing more recently faced a deficit of 4 percent in their sales.
The director of the Australian Retailers Association, Russell Zimmerman, expressed his opinion that this sales growth clearly portrays that online retailers were able to grab the bigger market share as compared to the traditional retailers.
According to the finance.ninemsn.com.au , Zimmerman said, “The awareness has been raised because consumers have moved to the online space and retailers are getting that now. They are also trying to attract the consumer that wouldn't traditionally come to their door because they weren't in that locality, or entice them to come to the (shopfront).”
Only a few retailers in Australia are providing online services. The study also found that of all the retailers surveyed, only one third of them were providing online services and that most of them moved into the online market less than a year ago..
“The problem for a small retailer is that they're not necessarily going to be tech-savvy. This is new technology they are struggling with and there's a lack of understanding as to how it works - how do go I get those search hits? What are the drivers to make my site look better?” Zimmerman added.
