(Hosting-NewsWire.com, August 21, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA - Chancellor George Osborne announced on August 3 2012 that a number of major firms will be investing in London’s technology hub, which is known as Tech City.
Vodafone’s investment includes a plan to open a new technology lab in East London. Barclays will be joining forces with Central to create a club that will assist over 20,000 firms in the course of the next five years.
The Tokyo-based gaming company GREE is also planning on opening a new game development studio and will relocate to a new office in Tech City.
Amazon’s new technology hub is situated near Tech City, and will house media development teams from two UK media firms that were recently acquired by Amazon. Amazon’s Digital Media Center in London will be the home of developers working on a new range of interactive digital services for television, phones (landlines and mobiles both), and computers. Their decision to expand to London was based on the fact that the city is a hotbed of technology talent, according to Amazon spokesperson Paula Byrne.
Facebook is also expanding to London and will establish an engineering office there (this is their first office outside the USA). As well, Microsoft recently announced plans to build a brand new studio in London that will build games for the XBox console.
Osborn attributes the increased investment by technology companies to London’s attitude towards business ventures. He is quoted as saying “You will not find a country anywhere in the world that is more open to technology and investment or more open for business than England.” Osborn goes on to say that London is putting the right policies and the right vision in place to attract even more businesses to Tech City as well as other areas of London.
Osborn further states that the British government leads the charge in supporting technology and information. Because the UK is the most wired economy in the world, the government does all they can to support current technology companies and to attract new ones.
