(Hosting-NewsWire.com, February 05, 2015 ) London, United Kingdom -- As crime thriller novels go, this one is fast and smart and pulls together dark elements that have made headline news these past few years. The UK has been scandalised by revelations about institutional child abuse that involves clergymen, civil servants and politicians. Not the usual backdrop to a crime novel. So why choose it?
'I didn't,' says Stephen Davison, the author of the bestselling crime series set in London. 'It just happened. When I write I don't have a plan. I'd be bored if I did. So the child-abuse thing came out of writing a character and seeing where it went. It fitted his motives very well I think.'
And solid motives seems to be a feature of this series. The 'bad guys' are never just bad. They have nuances about them that make them interesting.
'That's because I've always had the feeling everyone of us could be a bad guy given the right circumstances,' says Davison. 'If pushed in the wrong direction for too long, or having to deal with something terrible or unjust or painful. It means that all of us could kill, or maim or plot the demise of someone else given the right set of circumstances.'
The re-occuring characters in this crime series, Varcy and Kendrick - two London based homicide detectives - have become increasingly popular in the Kindle-sphere, particularly in the UK. So why the success? 'It's been a slow build effect,' says Davison. 'The stories are good, I think. But in the end its the developing relationship between Varcy and Kendrick and the rest of the crew that pulls people in.' And pull them in it has. The first two books in the series were bestsellers, spending well over a year in the Kindle bestsellers list. So what of The Hunted Kind? 'It builds on what has gone before in terms of the two detectives,' says Davison. 'The story is good too - as good as anything I've done. It's a real absorbing crime mystery. The readers who have bought into Varcy and Kendrick will love it.'
And what's next? 'A twist on Varcy and Kendrick, I think,' says Davison. 'I've got another character rattling around in my head, who is known to Varcy. I think I'll go with him and see where it leads.'
The Hunted Kind published on Kindle Jan 2015
