(Hosting-NewsWire.com, July 07, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter played a critical role in the Arab Spring revolutions of 2011 in Egypt. The citizenry as well as the establishment relied significantly on these two social media platforms to network and organize; not only in Egypt but also in other parts of the Middle East and North Africa as well. Facebook and Twitter were used to share information on issues around the pro-democracy movement in addition to calling for and coordinating protests.
Unrest in the Arab world continues today and social media plays an increasing role in the confrontations. Social activists continue to use it but so do powerful government personages and agencies. In the meantime, automatic translation tools are being incorporated into the
platforms that break down language barriers and have the potential for more widespread social movements.
Research associate with the DW Academy, Eira Martens, conducted a study on the role social media played in Arab Spring of 2011 in Egypt. The research showed that social media was not only used to organize the protests, it produced a collective identity in the crowd. It lowered the "fear threshold," as she put it, that an individual or small group might feel and created a sense of solidarity. Social media also decreased the time it would have taken for a successful outcome to the demonstrations. "In the Egyptian context, Facebook in particular helped accelerate the protests," Martens concluded. "The majority of the social media activists I interviewed believe that it would have taken a few more years to overthrow Mubarak's government."
