(Hosting-NewsWire.com, July 06, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Antivirus provider Eset published a number of figures that show that visitor PCs were compromised by a malicious software known as Darkleech, which hacked into Apache Web servers.
The rogue Apache module turns legitimate websites into potential minefields that expose visitors to those websites to a number of dangerous viruses and softwares that leak onto their computers as they continue to use the sites. Since October, over 40,000 websites IPs have been compromised and it seems to be a growing problem, since 15,000 were compromised in May alone.
Darkleech causes websites to redirect users to malicious websites that foster the attack code created by Blackhole exploit kit. The Blackhole exploit kit is used in underground online forums to help novices learn how to exploit vulnerabilities. Hackers pay up to $300 to unlock encrypted files to victims’ machines and attack their hardware.
One of the most unfortunate things about Darkleech is that the campaign continues to find ways to make it harder for for website and computer defense and antivirus programs to to keep computers and websites from being attacked, since it runs from legitimate websites with an HTML-based iframe tag.
