(Hosting-NewsWire.com, May 29, 2013 ) Orlando, FL -- After the White House integrated a tumblr blog, they promised there would be plenty of Gifs, providing an executive decision that the hard G sound for the file type was the correct pronunciation. However, compulsive engineer and .gif file creator Steve Wilhite has settled the age-old debate: In an interview with New York Times’ Bits Blog, he announced the official pronunciation is jif.
Since the format’s creation in 1987, Wilhite has always considered it to be a soft g sound. However, a manual for a defunct company 25 years ago and live endorsement are two different things. At the Webby Awards, Wilhite drove the point home by creating a .gif file, insisting on the soft g sound.
The argument over the name has gone on for years. It isn’t just about stubbornness or what just sounds right, both sides have legitimate reasons for they pronounce it a certain way.
Team Soft G now not only refers to the company Compuserve and it’s creator, but also to the words gin and gibe. Team Hard G on the other hand, stand for the word in the .gif format “graphics interchange format” which has a hard g sound, and for support of words like gift and gill. Nerds on this team will also point out another format, actually called Jif, that was created a year earlier. The two formats actually competed briefly, so the hard g teamers say there needs to be a difference in pronunciation for that reason.
Chances are, although the creator has tried to settle the debate, the conflict will never reach a conclusion, much like the “soda” vs “pop” argument.
