(Hosting-NewsWire.com, May 02, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- The parking spaces of downtown Durham streets could soon be something of a memory, according to the recommendation of a city-commissioned parking study that is set to be handed to the City Council for consideration.
The city hired the Kimley-Horn & Associates consulting firm $229,606 for the downtown study, as well as a similar study zegarding Ninth Street.
There are nearly 1,500 free parking spaces in the area that were looked at during the study, and the report has recommended that charging for half of them. The spots are located adjacent
to the Downtown Loop, near the American Tobacco and Performing Arts Centers, and West Village. Brightleaf Square spots are also possible payment spots as well.
Parking charges are the first of over 20 recommendations in a report based on the study that spans over 200 pages. Other Recommendations include:
-Charging for and time-limiting use of electric-vehicle charging stations. -Using a combination of electronic pay-by-space stations and cellphone technology to collect parking fees. -Improved security, with better lighting and more frequent guard patrols.
There is also a recommendation for a 24/7 permit for downtown residents that will run them $90 per month. There is currently no fee for parking downtown, and developer Scott Harmon, stated
that he is hearing “We are not ready” to change things from residents. Harmon is the Downtown Durham Inc.'s committee on the parking study.
“We’ll see how that shakes out,” Harmon said. But those who park downtown need to “shift gears” in how they think about parking, he said.
“People want to compare parking in urban areas with parking in suburbs,” where space is available and parking is typically free, he said. “It’s not physically or financially possible to
approach parking in the same way.”
Harmon said the consultants “have done a good job of ... looking at the facts” about parking in the city center.
“A lot of the focus is about making the overall system consistent ... and able to sustain itself financially,” he said.
