(Hosting-NewsWire.com, April 26, 2013 ) Santa Fe Springs,CA -- Akamai Technologies, which is a global internet provider, gave a glimpse into some interesting
scenarios that can arise in a “State of the Internet” report.
The company, which is based out of Cambridge, tracks many statistics in quarterly reports, including domestic and global internet speeds, mobile connectivity, IP addresses, and attacks from hackers and other nefarious sources. However, in this instance, the company looked at scenarios that involved multi-country studies to investigate what happens when entire nation-states lose internet access.
The most troubling portion of the study of internet shutdown came from what was tracked by Akamai in regards to Syria. The country is currently wrapped in a bloody civil war which is continually threatening to destabilize surrounding countries within the Middle East. The country's internet went down midday in late November until the first of December.
The company noted that the Syrian government blamed terrorists for the outage, while the U.S. State Department blamed the Syrian government for the shutdown. News reported that landline phone access was simultaneously hobbled. Two more shutdowns occurred in Syria, though
they were shorter periods of time.
Internet access is not always dropped through nefarious means, and can sometimes occur through technical limitation, said the report. For countries that do not have multiple ways to connect to the internet, it can mean drops. r. The report found that sometimes the internet is
dropped on purpose. Bangladesh had such a drop in December. The country had been relying on a single connection, and the maintenance was both necessary and planned.
There are also outages such as in Senegal, wherein Akamai noted a huge drop in traffic that lasted 11 hours. The report showed it was likely due to a “routing announcement” spike.
Regardless of the reasons, the report shows that, while many may feel like the internet is now an inherent part of society and the economy, it is a tangible and losable item if proper measures aren't taken to keep it running properly.
