(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 05, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Nearly three-quarters of social media users now utilize hashtags, according to a new study that was done by RadiumOne, which is a digital ad agency. Close to half click on hastags in order to explore related content to whatever they are currently viewing. That finding is more than a bit surprising to many as hashtags used in social media started out as an informal and wholly unsupported convention utilized by developers.
“Seventy-one percent of consumers say they post hashtags from their mobile devices,” RadiumOne VP Kamal Kaur told me yesterday. “I’ve even caught myself hashtagging in my emails.”
Hashtags now help communicat ideas and concepts, and within the 500-person study it was found that the tags help Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterst users redirect their friends and followers to content related to whatever direct content they are currently speaking on. That means smaller and abstracted points being made are more easily comprehended and followed with hashtags providing links to the larger concept that is driving the direct quotation or assertion.
The hashtag had been born strictly through geek-related circumstances on IRC (Internet Relay Chat, which was a group messaging system created in 1988. The form of tagging made its way to Twitter in 2007 and now is part of the average messaging culture.
Now, with nearly three-quarters of the study's respondents stating that the use of hashtags is standard in their messaging, there is definitely a use for the current form of relating topics and statements. Social media users seem to utilize the hashtags more preferentially on their mobile devices than they do on laptops or desktops. This may be due directly to the capability for doing so in many social media apps, according to Kaur.
“Fifty percent of respondents said they would explore new content through hashtags,” Kaur said. “People even use hashtags in Facebook, even though you can’t search by them yet there.”
