The YouTube team shared the news with the world on its own Blog. Google hit the billion unique visitors marke two years ago, and now YouTube is joining in.
"YouTube announced it had reached the milestone in a preview of the presentation it plans to make to advertisers May 1 in New York City, during the digital upfront," according to Dawn C. Chmielewski of the LA Times. "It hit 800 million monthly viewers in October 2011."
YouTube's milestone is an important one to more than a million content creators that span 30 nations around the world, who each earn money through their YouTube videos. There are also a million advertisers who are happy to see the numbers. Tens of thousands of YouTube partners have taken the time to create channels and build business that can be used to engage audiences of all types of demographics. All of the Ad Age Top 100 are now running campaigns on the video site.
A billion viewers means that there is nearly one in two individuals who can access the internet use YouTube. YouTube's monthly viewership is now equivalent to approximately 10 Super Bowl auciences running simultaneously. If the viewers of the site formed a country, it would be the third largest behind China and India.
PSY and Madonna would have to do a repeat of their Madison Square Garden performance more than 200,000 times each to reach the audience of the same size.
Google's Advertising and Research Director, Gunnard Johnson, stated a related story on AdWords Agency Blog in order to explain what is behind the growth of the website.
"The way people consume content is changing," Johnson said. "For the first time, an entire generation has grown up watching content on their own terms. This generation is defined by the Internet, mobile, and social – consuming content when and where they want. Nielsen calls this group Generation C because they are not just defined by their age group, but by their connected behavior."
