(Hosting-NewsWire.com, April 01, 2013 ) England, UK -- Eric Schmidt, of Google, stated that Mountain View will keep its two Oses, Android, and Chrome items separate after all. Schmidt, who is currently in India attending an IT event titled the Big Tent Activate Summit, stated that the two operating systems will stay separated, but also noted that more “commonality” between the two will exist.
Techmeme editor, @scepticgeek, who has been watching the conference via livestream, tweeted that Schmidt noted the Android and Chrome would be “separate and Independent for a long time.”
Google was asked if it could confirm whether the plans to keep Chrome and Android separate were true, but it refused to comment on the issue. What is most interesting regarding Schmidt's comments was that his words seem to contradict what he stated in February of 2011, when he told delegates that the Mobile World Congress that the Chrome and Android products would absolutely converge.
“We’re working overtime to get those technologies merged in the right way,” he said at the time, but added: “I learned a long time ago, don’t force technology to merge when it’s not ready, wait for the technology to mature to the point when it can be merged.”
To put in layman's terms, it meant that a Chrome-Android merger was inevitable, but would not be rushed into. Now, his comments suggest that Google is still building a gradual path towards the convergence, but without sure merging and instead only “increasing commonality”.
The rumors that Google's new quasi-desktop OS Chrome, and its new touch-based mobile OS Android might be near merging were sparked earlier in the month when the head of the latter branch noted was shuffled out to another role within the Google company, alone with Sundar Pichai (who heads the Chrome apps taking over. Pichai did not leave his existing criteria and duties but instead added the Android brief to his existing Chrome and apps portfolio. To many, that signified a unifying impetus for the job changes.
While Chrome and Android being said to 'remain separate and independent for a long time' has the same ultimate point as Schmid's earlier comments, it holds a more negative and finalized tone to it.
Many still believe the eventual merger of Chrome and Android is an inevitable heading for both groups, since the difference in hardware has essentially been dissolved. The Chrome OS was announced mid-2009, while the launch of the iPad in 2010 created the tablet category, pulling the rug out from under mini-laptops and removing the desktop computing market as well. All of that points to a usefulness of merging the two branches together into a single entity.
