(Hosting-NewsWire.com, January 24, 2013 ) Stafford,TX -- A new project is aimed at allowing disabled individuals an opportunity to build independent careers has earned a £50,000 grant from North Yorkshire County Council.
The A1 Computer Works, located in Colburn, offers a training and support regimen to help employ adults with disabilities in the Hambleton and Richmondshire areas.
The training is for suitable candidates, who achieve entry-level computing technician qualifications through the program. The project provides services to both the voluntary sector, as well as the local business sector. The jobs range from website design and computer repairs, up to key advice on topics regarding internet search engines.
Tayna Cooke, who is chief officer of the project, stated: “A1 Computer Works has been running for about 10 years now, starting off in Catterick Village.
“Our mission then was to create employment and help unemployed people learn new skills and brush up on their CVs.
“When we saw this funding was available we were thinking about what we could do to help people with disabilities, and for the last three years have been teaching computer basics – so we thought we would combine the two.”
County Councillor Clare Wood said: “This is a tremendously exciting project which not only offers support to people with disabilities, but also demonstrates how imaginatively and creatively the voluntary sector in North Yorkshire approaches and embraces care and support.”
The A1 Computer Works project was given the gran from the North Yorkshire County Council's Innovations Fund.
“We are delighted with this support from the county council,” said Ms Cooke.
“A1 Computer Works will not only offer some supported employment places itself, but will also train and equip people to launch themselves into new careers in the rapidly expanding world of information technology.”
She added: “We are more interested in what people can do than what they think they can’t – so even if you think you would not be able to benefit from this, come and challenge us to help you.”
