(Hosting-NewsWire.com, January 13, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- The newest IDC report has revealed that purpose-built backup appliances around in the global market have maintained flattened numbers for the third fiscal quarter of 2012.
According to the IDC, revenue gained taken in saw close to $655.3 million for the quarter, and in the “open” PBBA space, the market saw growth at the tune of 6.4%, which represented about $567.6 million in the totality of revenue.
The PBBA are defined by the IDC as standalone server-style disk solutions or “getaway devices” that serve one or more purposes in regards to backup space. The IDC maintains the definition of PBBA when it comes to situations wherein backup engine application is decoupled with appliances.
EMC Corp's latest Avamar appliance is just one example of the recently graced channel. The appliance offers specialized deduplication features targeted at the mid-market level, plus virtualization options which expand general flexibility in data centers. EMC was reorganized as IDC's 2011 market leader in PBBA space, and owned 65.5% of the market. The latest fiscal year has seen that number move minimally.
EMC and Sysmantec Corp. have been highlighted by IDC as major vendors who have seen gains when PBBA. EMC saw revenues of $436.4 in quarter three of 2012, while Symantec saw the most significant overall growth, with 94.4% gained. That helped them skyrocket from $23 million in the 2011 third quarter to a $44.7 million for 2012. EMC still controls he market with 66.6% share in the third fiscal quarter.
IBM and Hewlett-Packard saw growth diminish, respectively, with IBM taking the largest hit of the two. The company posted a 42.8% loss, seeing only $70.6 million in PBBA revenue. That represents a $123.4 million revenue drop since the same quarter in 2011. HP took less of a blow, but still saw a 5.9% decrease, posting a tally of $29.3 million in revenue, down from $31.1 million a year ago.
