(Hosting-NewsWire.com, January 08, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- According to the research firm Gartner, storing information on a public cloud, is a strong option for vendors as an alternative to on-premise storage. But the firm also points out that storage providers vary widely in their ability to meet requirements of enterprise IT. That is why customers must stay engaged with their cloud provider and plan well to vet vendors before deciding if data that is imperative to the company should be moved to cloud-based storage.
The benefits of cloud storage are similar to those offered by other forms of cloud-based computing. IT can provide cost and agility qualities and help end user customers. Still, there are concerns around security, privacy, and accessibility that could have some companies thinking twice about storage in general.
The landscape for cloud storage is still a new system for vendors. Traditional storage vendors such as Microsoft and IBM are competing with new, up-and-coming cloud companies like Amazon Web Services and Nirvanix.
Still more companies are turning from managed hosting to cloud storage options. Initial vendors have to compete on pricing, security options, and resiliency, according to Gartner. All this must be done will thinking ahead when it comes to providers differentiating on services, support rendered, and management efficiency.
There are also hidden costs that companies must be aware of, says Gartner. Considering total cost of ownership, which often extends past simple Per-GB storage rates must be taken into account.
Bandwidth, accessing data costs, and migration fees for information (both internal and external alike) are other fees that need to be queried and considered. The pay-as-you-go model that providers use is a different sales and support model than traditional storage companies. Still, vendors offer APIs for access to data, and often have automatic scalability that is used to meet rising demands of customers.
