(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 19, 2012 ) Harrisburg, NC -- In October, comScore reported that Google surpassed its search engine market share record by posting 66.9% of all searched within the United States. Microsoft's Bing had a record month as well, as it reached 16% of the share.
Prior to October, Google's previous record had been 66.9%, which it reached for both June and July of 2012. Google reached 65.4% in October of 2011, which stood just under a year.
Bing continued a slow but steady ascent in its overall market shares. The company was at 15.9% in September, and moved up 0.1% in October. Bing held a 14.8% share in October of 2011.
Yahoo had been losing ground in the recent years, but held steady between September and October. The company holds at 12.2%, while at October of 2011 it had a 15.2% of searches.
Ask tried to hold its own at 3.2% of searched in October, which was down from 3.5% the month prior. AOL held its meager holdings of 1.8%. Both companies have actually seen slight gain since October of last year.
Mobile searches were not involved in the comScore study, as the company only measures desktop searches.
Google organic searches were up to 69.5% within October, up 0.1% from September. Bing searches fell by the same margin in October.
“Explicit core” searches grew 8% after a dip in September searches (from 16.3 to 17.6 billion) in October. Google still leads with 11.8 billion searches, while Bing sits at second with 2.8 billion searches. Yahoo sits at fourth place with 2.1 billion. Ask and AOL fight for scraps with 650 million and 560 million searches respectively.
While Bing had been pushing hard to do a face-to-face comparison with Google's search engine, the measure seems to have held little-to-no effect on consumers. Google seems to simply hold a general likeability amongst average users. Whether or not Bing can find a way around that truth is yet to be seen, but increasingly unlikely.
