(Hosting-NewsWire.com, November 20, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- More small- and midsized New Zealand companies are moving away from social media interactions as a way to promote their business online, according to a published report. MYOB, found out that only about 20% of the 1,000 companies they surveyed were using social media sites, like Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter, on a regular basis. That number is down from 25% from the same reporting period last year. MYOB is an accounting software firm that regular surveys smaller enterprises, Based on the finding, MYOB researchers surmise the biggest reason behind the decline is that many companies have time constraints that prevent them from devoting the time necessary to promote themselves on social media sites. It noted that fewer businesses, in addition to having a social media presence, were maintaining a blog site for their company or using search engines to advertise their business. More often, MYOB noted, companies are likely to use the Internet for transactional reasons, such as making purchases from suppliers. According to MYOB’s New Zealand general manager, Julian Smith, many companies enjoyed an initial boost through social media interaction, but are unable to maintain it over the long haul. She stated stating that the businesses “don’t have the time or the resources to manage a wide variety of online marketing tools.” Tim Howell, the marketing manager at Wellington-based Intergen, an information technology company, said that companies need to have a thorough plan in place when it comes to interacting on social media sites. "A tweet here or a Facebook post there isn't going to create any sustainable presence to engage customers, which is what it is all about, Howell said. "It requires a consistent effort, a degree of responsiveness and willingness to be open. That fits with the culture of many organisations, but some it doesn't. If you don't plan and resource for that you probably won't achieve the results you are looking for." Some forms of Internet use is on the increase for small- and medium-sized businesses, MYOB’s report found. For example, the use of Skype or other Internet-based free phone services was up 23.5% from 21% while email marketing to current and potential customers was up 16%, 20-28%, over the same period last year.
