(Hosting-NewsWire.com, November 18, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- Search-engine giant Google has launched a redesigned search-results page.
Google has removed the sidebar that it added to the left side of the screen in 2010. It was a major change that brought News, Images and other search features. Now Google has arranged those options – which function as tabs – across the top of the page.
Because the left-side bar is gone, Google has shifted its results list over, and now it has more room to display its Knowledge Graph. This feature debuted in May and shows users a wealth of information on well-documented topics.
For example, Google a historical figure and you might find information such as birth date, family members and physical characteristics. The data are drawn from public sources, including Wikipedia.
The new results page offers better display for Knowledge Graph.
Google also has stated in its official blog that it is trying to achieve a design that can be used across platforms – desktop Web browsers, phones and tablets. This latest change synchs with smartphones and tablet devices. Google’s format on those devices was updated earlier – last month, the search engine updated its mobile site, and in July 2011 released a version optimized for tablets.
The Knowledge Graph suggests more features to come. One is already in play.
For Android phone users, Google Now offers voice recognition. The app will respond to a question with information pulled from the Knowledge Graph. This also is available in the iPhone app by Google.
An experiment is testing the addition of other information to search results. People who are participating in a trial can get search results from Gmail. TIME’s Jared Newman foresees a possible blurring of public and private spheres.
“It’s easy to imagine Google building one search engine that covers both your personal data and public information – for better or worse,” Newman wrote recently.
Not all searches produce results with a relevant Knowledge Graph. In those cases, users are presented with a large empty space.
