(Hosting-NewsWire.com, November 15, 2012 ) Fairfax, VA -- Apple has delayed implementation of turn-by-turn navigation for its mapping service in Australia. That would make the country the last in the world to receive the Apple Maps feature and put another dent in the company’s credibility.
Turn-by-turn navigation was scheduled to be available in October, Apple said in September when it released an upgrade of its operating system, iOS 6.
But according to Apple’s website, the debut of the navigation feature was delayed until this month. The website also noted the last country in which the feature would be activated was Australia. Fifty-two countries can use turn-by-turn navigation, including Morocco.
Apple Maps incorrectly labeled several Australian landmarks when the app was released. Famous locations such as Uluru and an Apple store in Sydney were in the wrong places. Drivers in Australia were given directions that sent them into buildings or through bodies of water.
Turn-by-turn navigation has not been free of problems, though. Users in the United States have reported that the app gave them incorrect directions.
Scott Forstall, the former chief of iOS, said at the September operating system debut that the app for Australia was in “qualifying stages.” Forstall quit after errors in Apple Maps brought numerous complaints.
The company’s chief executive in September made a public apology.
“We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers,” CEO Tim Cook wrote in a statement that appeared on the company’s website.
“While we’re improving Maps, you can try alternatives,” Cook wrote, suggesting users turn to competitors such as Google Maps.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Forstall allegedly refused to sign the apology and was told to resign.
Apple also announced, at the September debut of the iPhone 5, that a new version of iTunes would be released in October. But no iTunes update had been released as of Oct. 31.
