(Hosting-NewsWire.com, November 13, 2012 ) Houston, TX -- The United Kingdom will start new computer science classes to replace information and communications technology teacher training courses. The secretary of state for education, Michael Gove, said the move was needed to ensure the U.K.’s “success in the global race.” Leading high-tech companies – including Facebook, IBM and Microsoft – will aid in designing the computer science courses, which will begin in September 2013. A government scholarship program will be introduced to expand the teaching of computer science. Top graduates will be able to receive 20,000 pounds in the first year. Current information and communications teachers also will be eligible for computer science training. The new curricula and scholarships are part of a government effort to develop a core group of expert and enthusiastic instructors who can improve the teaching of computer science in schools. The way computer skills now are taught is “highly unsatisfactory,” according to a report by the Royal Society. It found students learned little more than database and word processor skills. “Computer science is not just a rigorous, fascinating and intellectually challenging subject,” Gove said, according to the engineering and technology magazine E&T. “It is also vital to our success in the global race.” He said instructors are key to improving the teaching of computer science. “If we want our country to produce the next Sir Tim Berners-Lee – creator of the Web – we need the very best computer science teachers in our classrooms,” Gove said. “They need to have the right skills and deep subject knowledge to help their pupils.” The nation has to focus on technology to compete internationally, the director of BCS Academy of Computing said. “The U.K. needs far more technology creators and entrepreneurs if we are to stay competitive in the global economy,” said Bill Mitchell. “That means students need to be taught not just how software and hardware works, but also how to create new digital technology for themselves.” About AzumaLearning.com:
