(Hosting-NewsWire.com, October 23, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- On Tuesday, LinkedIn debuted its new profile design in hopes of helping users more easily build a professional identity.
The revamped profile design is available now for English-language speakers and will be available to all users within a few months.
During a media presentation at LinkedIn headquarters, the professional networking website’s engineering team said new profiles offer several new features, including inline editing, a sidebar for adding profile sections, high resolution images, and drag and drop profile sections.
The new profiles also allow users to “follow” certain individuals as well as news feeds and organizations.
"The ability to follow thought leaders on LinkedIn allows members to engage directly in professional conversations with influencers, comment directly on professionally relevant topics, and share them with their peers," LinkedIn said.
"For our influencers who will be regularly posting content and updates, LinkedIn offers the ability to reach the largest network of professionals around the world and be able to have professionally relevant conversations with them."
The new profiles, which some say are similar to those offered by Facebook in appearance, offer users improved access to their professional connections through “rich and visual insights on the people and companies in your network," the company said.
The new profile places users’ recent activity at the top of the page, effectively creating status updates and showing recent connections more prominently.
The changes follow other updates to the network made earlier this year, such as endorsements, all of which are aimed at encouraging more interaction.
Users will have the ability to filter network connections through keyword searches. For example, a user can search through a friend’s connections for people who specialize in a given skill.
Changes will be apparent when users look at other people’s profiles as well. When viewing the profile of someone to whom the user is not connected, experiences and affiliations the members have in common will appear.
