(Hosting-NewsWire.com, September 29, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- It is sometimes hard to tell if Stephan Bonnar is being serious; however, the once retired UFC veteran is reported by MMAJunkie.com to have claimed he will not fight anyone who does not have more followers than himself.
“I know it sounds cheesy, but it's true,” Bonnar told the site. “That's how I feel. That's a measure of someone's popularity and I just want a bigger name. The last three opponents, I've had more Twitter followers than them, and I've beat them, and I feel like I deserve a bigger name now. I really don't have an interest in fighting an up-and-comer type, guys who are climbing their way up and people don't really know how good they are. I've done that a lot in my career."
While Bonnar boasts a respectable 53,000+ followers, he received more than he could have hoped when he was paired up against current and long-time Middleweight Champion, Anderson Silva. The UFC international superstar carries with him a belt, a legendary status, and over two million followers.
"I got another text from (my manager) asking how I'd feel about fighting Anderson, and I laughed," Bonnar said. "Like, 'Yeah, good luck trying to pull that one off.' Of course I'd fight Anderson – 2.5 million Twitter followers? Geez. Like this will ever happen.'”
The Bonnar/Silva fight is set for October 13 at UFC 153 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Bonnar and Silva are both being thrown into the fight on relatively short notice. The card originally had former Lightweight Champion, Frankie Edgar, facing off against current Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo. Unfortunately, Aldo had to bow out due to a foot injury. Quinton “Rampage” Jackson was slated to fight highly touted up-and-comer Glover Teixeira, until Jackson dropped out with an elbow injury.
The card was left without big names or big fights to fill the venue. With the bitter memory of UFC 151 cancellation still fresh in everyone’s mind, it appeared the worst was about to occur. The UFC scrambled and was able to pull out a Silva-Bonnar quasi-superfight.
Bonnar has been on a winning streak, but has put on many miles with his brawling and grinding style. He also has a history of injuries plague his career. He will fight Silva at Light-Heavyweight (205lbs) in a non-title bout. A chance to beat a legend is an opportunity Bonnar simply cannot pass up.
Bonnar has never been finished by knockout or submission in his career, and has only been bested by former and current champions. Silva rarely leaves an opponent standing in the cage, and has finished his last four fights. Fans will surely be treated to fireworks on October 13.
