(Hosting-NewsWire.com, September 24, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- With the cost of the average ticket to an NFL game rising every year, one way to save is to buy tickets at the last minute. According to SeatGeek.com, the best way to save on the cost of attending an NFL game is to wait until a day or two before kickoff to buy tickets.
“Ticket prices in the 24 to 48 hours prior to the game are about 30% lower on average than the price of tickets purchased two or three weeks in advance,” SeatGeek stated after an analysis of ticket sale data for the past three football seasons. “Even when compared to prices seen one week prior to gametime, tickets purchased near kickoff will net fans an average savings of 18 to 20%.”
Any way you measure it, the cost of attending an NFL game is going up. A look at the face-value cost of tickets shows that prices are rising. A ticket in 2006 sold for an average of $62, and that had increased 5.6% from the previous year. Last year, the average had risen to $77.34, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.
On the secondary market, often it’s even more expensive – the average price so far this year is about $190, according to ticket specialist TiqIQ. Numbers from secondary ticket sellers differ, however. RazorGator this past spring put the average price for a regular-season ticket at $167.75. Although ticket costs on the resale market change frequently, they almost always are higher than tickets purchased at face value – unless it’s gameday, and a secondary seller is looking to unload his goods as quickly as possible.
Along with rising ticket prices, the cost of parking, food, drinks and other items purchased at stadiums also has gone up. And attendance of NFL games over the past five years has declined by 4.5%.
One report linked the rising game costs to lower attendance. Americans are less willing to spend hundreds of dollars on entertainment, “When the 50-inch flat screen in the family room lets you see the game at no additional expense.” This according to a CovergEx analysis reported in the Los Angeles Times.
