(Hosting-NewsWire.com, August 14, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- The Nevada legislature, earlier this year, made some changes to Nevada’s online gambling laws. The changes allow the Governor of the state to enter into agreements or compacts that permit residents of other states to play on online poker rooms based in Nevada. As of yet, there have been no compacts agreed upon but discussions are ongoing with the states of New Jersey and Delaware.
No decisions on the compacts are expected this year but one of the top executives of a leading gaming company in the United States believes New Jersey and Nevada are close to an agreement. Jim Murren, MGM Resorts International CEO says, “I think it’s likely that in 2014 we’ll see a compact between New Jersey and Nevada. We’ve really been focusing on Nevada’s ability to compact with other states, create more liquidity.”
Nevada is only the 35th most populous state in the nation, so these agreements are very important to the state. Nevada has an estimated 2.8 million residents and not all of them will actually sign up to play. Once competition intensifies, online poker rooms will find it hard to maintain a solid flow of traffic within its own borders. It would be a great help if the rooms could pick up traffic from New Jersey. With 8.9 million residents, it is the 11th largest state when it comes to population.
Casinos in New Jersey are naturally against the idea but there objections have largely gone unheard. “Future opportunities for growth and development with other jurisdictions” are likely, said David Rebuck, Director of the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE). Chairperson of the Nevada State Gaming Control, A.G. Burnett, Rebuck’s counterpart said, “Nevada is striving to do what it can in regards to compacts. We do not jump into the fire without having done a lot of cautious research and study into the particulars of such agreements, and that phase is nearing completion.”
