(Hosting-NewsWire.com, June 17, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- As of July 2012, the census found that people eligible for retirement are opting to stay in urban areas rather that quiet, rural towns where they had moved in the past, so that they would have better access to a job if they had to come out of retirement.
Since the recession hit, those who would be retiring now don’t have as much put back in savings as those of retirement age 10 years ago. Many people who had bought vacation homes in small, rural areas moved to those homes after retirement, but the number of people owning vacation homes has decreased in the past seven years.
The census estimates this is because the rural areas have been hit the hardest during the recession, with high unemployment rates. Farming and coal mine populations are also dwindling in the rural areas and younger people are moving to the cities to find job and other life opportunities that lower populated towns can’t offer.
Rural areas, which mainly include manufacturing and farming, have seen many residents move to urban areas before. However, the moves now coinciding with sharp declines in U.S. birth rates and an aging population, resulting in a first-ever annual loss. From 2011 to 2012, rural areas lost more than 40,000 people, a 0.1 percent drop. 46.2 million, or 72 percent of the U.S. population still live in rural areas.
