(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 22, 2013 ) Köln, Germany -- For quite a few years, encryption was seen as something of a silver bullet. One could simply turn it on and instantly compliant with all data magically secured. However, in the last half-decade, organizations have become increasingly aware of the fact that the first step to effective protection of data is to define what type of data they must protect.
That need for understanding is what is driving the need for companies to adopt an enterprise data protection strategy, rather than simply seeing the process as a series of single-point solutions. The 2012 Global Encryption Trends Study, which is an annual independent research report by the Ponemon Institute and sponsored by Thales, has revealed that a majority of companies hold formal encryption applied across the enterprise.
The data shows that the strategy behind business issues for non-IT businesses are fast becoming a determinant on how companies encrypt. For the first time, US business managers have now become highly influential in germs of encryption strategy, even overtaking IT security teams. According to a study that began in 2005, the percentage of IT budget allocated to encryption has grown year over year to nearly double its starting percentage of 10%.
When it comes to just why organizations place the emphasis on encryption, the survey results show something of a surprise. The most significant threats to exposure of sensitive or confidential data indicated that the risk of exposure is twice the risk of standard malicious attacks. Other than employee mistakes, unintended leakage through forensic requests, as well as general malfunctions, make up a large portion of the exposure.
When it comes to the organization utilized to deploy encryption there were also surprises to be found. More than two-thirds of respondents stated their organization used five different technologies in order to encrypt. From databases, applications, clouds, and cross-network or email systems, fragmented pictures with no single dominant usage scenario was clear.
Still, a trend did emerge in a clear shift of interest from relatively mature static technologies to more sophisticated and focused data that was used in real-time.
