(Hosting-NewsWire.com, April 21, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- It is not all that uncommon for one's latest drunken adventures' pictures to make a poor impression on a prospective employer, thanks to their availability on social networks like Facebook. UCSD alumnus Adam Markowitz, however, thinks he has discovered a way to merge the social network with the professional world to avoid such troubles.
Markowitz is the CEO and founder of Portfolium, which is a site serving as an online portfolio for current students to visually display their resumes and academic achievements. The website, which was launched in 2012 gives a positive spin on the social-media trap that is nefarious social activities and business interest.
The idea was a concept thought up by Markowitz in 2008, and he found it incongruous that there was a sort of permanent record of his social pastimes and experiences online, and yet nothing existed to express his hard work in academia.
“There wasn’t an online profile that I was proud to show an employer, my family or my parents,” Markowitz said. “All my cousins are the same age as me, so they were in college at the time. It was a little sad that I couldn’t tell you what some of them were majoring in, but I could tell you
about every party they ever went to, because that was what I saw online.”
ThePortfolium takes the basics in function of social networking sites, while allowing users to choose to view the portfolios created by others and so forth. Each user can have a complete set of controls over the privacy settings, along with all the content that one can upload to a portfolio.
That allows controls of pictures and videos. Student can also utilize the description boxes for any entry that is uploaded.
Such features allow for an organizational feel of control for the user, and allows student to use a list of functions to group their portfolio entries into useful categories. With the product students are capable of showcasing themselves in different settings at career fairs or interviews.
A student who has been using thePorfolium decided to bring an iPad to a career fair in order to show employers his portfolio. When employers saw the accomplishments, it was clearly a hit.
“Why did you give me your resume?” the employer asked. “You should have started with this. This is exciting. I can see what you’re working on — see how much you’re involved.”
