(Hosting-NewsWire.com, April 21, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Facebook is still the number one spot when it comes social networking, but its total popularity is not as strong as it once was, according to a new study of teenagers use in the media sector. The sign is just the latest in the “teenager” problem that Facebook is still battling.
Over 5,200 tennagers participated in a survey for the researched, which was conducted by the investment bank and asset-management firm Pipar Jaffray.
The study noted 33% of teens called Facebook the most important social network for them. However, twitter is now not far behind, as it sits with 30% of teens naming it their preference when it comes to social networking.
Only six months prior to these recent numbers, a fall study showed that the split was 42% to 27% for the companies respectively. Thus, the gap seems to be narrowing quite quickly.
Instagram was in third place with 17% of teens noting it as the most important social network. Of course, its owner is now Facebook, so technically, Facebook does hold a large command, all
things considered. Google+ came in at 5% overall, with Tumblr 4%, and Pinterest at 2%.
There was a 4% mark of respondents that noted they preferred other social mediums. Such mediums included sites like Wanelo, Vine, Kik, and 4Chan.
Teens were asked to list all their favorite media sites beyond the first-place site. Youtube was ranked in second place, while Twitter took third amongst teens. Instagram dropped off as not important, and Google+ and Tumblr were nearly tied for fourth. Flickr gained with meager marks
that are still under 3% overall.
TechCrunch concluded that based on the numbers: "Just as much as Twitter poses a threat, so too do these up-and-coming social apps that have taken teens by storm." Among those apps are Snapchat and Pheed, which was not mentioned in the study.
Another finding from Pipar Jaffray showed more than half of all teens believe that social media is affecting their purchasing habits. Both studies prove that social media, in whatever form, is certainly still something of a social motivator in today's youth society.
