(Hosting-NewsWire.com, March 16, 2013 ) Las Vegas, NV -- Two weeks prior to the horse meat fiasco that has plagued European Burger King, suppliers to the chain's twitter were hacked. To make matters worse, the yet-to-be-found culprits had made it appear to followers of Burger King that it had been bought by McDonald's.
"We just got sold to McDonalds! Look for McDonalds in a hood near you," the company tweeted at noon ET Monday.
The Burger King's Twitter profile photo was then switched to the McDonald's logo and the profile stated that "Just got sold to McDonalds because the whopper flopped." The Twitter page also included line “Freedom is failure” with “freedom” clearly misspelled, as well as a dead link to a supposed press release.
Over the course of an hour of being hacked, the culprit utilized increasingly absurd statements on behalf of Burger King, and Twitter suspended the account almost immediately following.
"The Twitter account of the Burger King brand has been hacked," said Bryson Thornton, spokesman for Burger King, who apologized for the incident. "We have worked directly with administrators to suspend the account until we are able to reestablish our legitimate site and authentic postings."
Twitter stated on its own behalf that it does not comment on individual accounts due to the concern for privacy. It did urge individuals to practice precaution when choosing passwords.
McDonalds also released a tweet stating, "We empathize with our @BurgerKing counterparts. Rest assured, we had nothing to do with the hacking."
Some took shots at Burger King, given that the timing was right for an easy target: "Somebody needs to tell Burgerking that 'whopper123' isn't a secure password," tweeted @flibblesan. The hacker, using the @BurgerKing twitter account, denied the password was related to the Whopper, Burger King's iconic burger.
