(Hosting-NewsWire.com, January 24, 2013 ) Stafford,TX -- A new whitepaper from the IDC that was recently released suggests that there is a troubling skills gap for cloud computing. The research, sponsored by Microsoft, showed that the trend was likely to continue in 2013.
The research noted that over 600 organizations expressed as the work on cloud services evolves, that cloud-related skills “represent virtually all of the growth opportunities in IT worldwide”.Such work was necessary for cloud-specific skills that grow at six times the rate of need compared to all other IT skills.
The paper expressed that worldwide IT jobs will reach 30 million by the end of 2015; but that 22.3 million non-cloud jobs represent a compound annual growth rate of 0% since 2011. The 7 million cloud-related jobs, in comparison, have jumped to 26% compound annual growth, constituting 2.7 million since 2011.
It may not be surprising to see that when broken down into specific demographics, North America is where a majority of the cloud-oriented jobs are likely to be by the year 2015. Asia and the EMEA are training behind but also are seeing solid growth.
The report did make a point to note that EMEA's adoption of the private sector compensated for the struggles of some of its states, as the area is “a complex mix of developed and emerging countries”.
The big question that stems from the research Is the obvious one. “Why are cloud-oriented positions not being filled?”
“IT managers consistently report that while the economy represents a challenge to filling cloud-related positions, finding applicants with the appropriate expertise, certification, or training is a much bigger issue”, the report notes.
The other reason is likely due to the large surge in cloud usage, which may be outperforming the ability of individuals to attain enough knowledge on the system and practice fast enough.
Cushing Anderson, IDC program vice president, said of the results: “Despite modest growth of the IT sector overall in the US, cloud-ready jobs are increasing as we head into 2013, but with this increase comes the harsh reality that workforces around the world are steps behind when it comes to attaining the skills necessary to thrive in the cloud computing industry.”
“There is no one-size-fits-all set of criteria for jobs in cloud computing – therefore, training and certification is essential for preparing prospective job candidates to work in cloud-related jobs,” he added.
