(Hosting-NewsWire.com, October 20, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- All the buzz about Apple’s iPhone aside, a new study indicates the device may well be the most accident-prone.
That translates to high costs for the more than 30 percent of iPhone owners who have damaged their devices in the last year alone, according to a recent CBS report.
A survey by SquareTrade obtained by Slash Gear suggests consumers have spent more than $5.9 billion on iPhone repairs in the United States since the smartphone was initially released in 2007.
That’s $100 million more than President Barack Obama and challenger Mitt Romney will spend on their presidential campaigns combined. It’s also twice the amount Americans spend collectively on toilet paper each year and 29 times what they spend on contraceptives annually.
The Apple Care+ program allows owners of new Apple devices to register for a one-time fee of $99 to extend support and repairs for two years after a new purchase. However, those who don’t take advantage of the program who aren’t up to fixing broken devices themselves are likely to pay $199 for a broken iPhone 4S screen out-of-warranty and $149 for a broken screen on previous models.
The cost of repairing accidental iPhone damage is 10 times more expensive than the cost of stolen iPhones, in spite of recent reports that iPhone thefts are increasing.
The most most common cause of iPhone damage is dropping the device. The second most common cause is accidentally immersing the phone in liquid.
Not all iPhone users are willing to repair their damaged phones. According to the study, 12 percent of respondents said they are willing to tolerate a cracked screen while 6 percent said they would rather tape their phone together than pay to have it repaired.
Apple has long had a reputation for expensive repairs to its products. Earlier this year, the iFixit team – a group publishing electronic device repair information online – reported it had to completely disassemble the new MacBook Pro to get to the machine’s core, making it the least repairable laptop in history.
Apple asks for a $199 fee to replace the new Retina Display MacBook Pro battery, which owners cannot do themselves as the battery is attached above the trackpad cable with glue.
